I'm a 20-something British animator based in Halifax, NS. I've been animating since I first found Newgrounds, and am now a graduate with an Animation degree. I've worked for Sun and Moon Studios, A Productions and the BBC, and I hope to do a lot more!

GSCEs and Animations

Posted by Timsplosion - February 15th, 2008

Well, today, I got my Options for GSCEs, so I can now pick the subjects that will dictate (potentially) the rest of my life. I have the Half-Term to think it over, so that gives me time. I've e-mailed several animation companies in the UK to see if they had advice for what GSCEs could get me into the animation biz (where (hopefully) they'd use flash) and set me off in the direction I want to go. Only one animation company has turned up so far near enough for me to think of work experience there, but that's a whole year away yet.
Hopefully I'll start to get replies from the various companies over the next week so I can have made a good choice by the time that I go back to school.

So far, my Top 3 picks are: Media Studies, Graphics and Music. The first two, I'm hoping, will get me into animation, and the third, well, I really really really really really reeeaally want to do (please let me get it!) because I love music (I find it hard to imagine not having any of the music I listen to), plus it gives me a back up plan to fall back on should I need it.
Well, sorry if I bored anyone, congratulations if you actually read (and cared (genuinely)) about any of that. An e-cookie should materialise in the e-stomachs of anyone that managed that.

I'm currently taking Media Studies in college, and it actually isn't that bad. Were currently filming the opening scene of a thriller which basically translates into me and a few mates goofing around and filming us engaged in topics of conversation like abortion and the film American Beauty. After that we'll quickly throw together a shot idea and have a laugh filming it.

I know a few people who took Graphics in senior school, and i think most of them enjoyed it. The work-load is hefty mind. Music i can't comment on. I always sucked at it and spend most of the lessons i had (before i dropped it) pissing about trying to play instruments.

I wouldn't worry about these subjects having too great an effect on the rest of your life (although it's cool to see you planning and what not). College is where all of that really starts to kick off.

Thanks for the tips. I gotta say that I got 2 replies from some of the animation companies, and they all recommended Art and Maths (Maths is compulsory, I don't have to worry about that), so the Top 3 Options that I picked were Art, Music and Media Studies, with Graphics being 4th.
